A solar cell is a device that converts the energy of sunlight directly into

 electricity by the photovoltaic effect.

 

The choice of solar cell used in a solar panel is fundamental to the

 performance of the solar panel. The highest efficiencies on silicon

 have been achieved on monocrystalline cells.

 

The very latest high efficiency solar cells used in our photovoltaic

 panels ensure the maximum production per square meter.

 

Philadelphia Solar panels use a range of solar cells from Delsolar, Bosch and REC amongst other sources, offering up to 18.20% efficiency.

SIMPLE EXPLANATION

Photons in sunlight hit the solar panel and are absorbed by semiconducting materials, such as silicon. Electrons (negatively charged) are knocked loose from their atoms, allowing them to flow through the material to produce electricity.

 

Due to the special composition of solar cells, the electrons are only allowed to move in a single direction. Complementary positive charges, called holes, are also created and flow in the opposite direction to the electrons.

 

An array of solar cells converts solar energy into a usable amount of direct current (DC) electricity.

MONOCRISTALINE

These types of solar panels use solar cells which are made from a very pure single large crystal, cut from ingots.

 

They are the most efficient type of solar panels but are also the most expensive. Their performance is somewhat better in low light conditions.
